Retro 60s Chic Hawaiian Hotel Opens in Honolulu
Check into this retrofitted 112-room motor lodge a few blocks off the main drag (Kalakaua Avenue) on Lewers Street in Honolulu’s bustling Waikiki Beach. Midcentury-era films depicting California’s beaches and Palm Springs’ wistful desert are screened at the pool, and the lounge just behind the check-in desk features built-ins stocked with ‘60s and ‘70s tchotchkes. Each room’s décor features tropical-motif fabrics, soothing aqua, and blue hues, blonde-toned woods and midcentury-design lighting. Beach cruisers help you explore outside the hotel.
A budget hotel originally built in the ’60s. Inspired by the existing structure’s mid-century modern architecture, their objective was to reimagine old Waikiki (think slack key guitars, Duke Kahanamoku, and a pastel-hued VW Bus hoisting a longboard) through the lens of modern creatives.
“This is a building that was originally built in 1961 by Roy Kelley, the founder of Outrigger Enterprises Group, and one of the early pioneers of Waikiki” according to co-owner André Tatibouet, founder of Aston Hotels & Resorts. “The building has great bones, and I have to give credit where credit is due. Sean had an unbelievably great vision for what could be done, and it’s been executed very well.”
He adds the redevelopment has “found ways to retain the old flavor of what was once Waikiki”
